Ikuta Ryū Jiuta koto and Maeda Ryū Heike biwa master Satō Masakazu (Satō Tadashi) was born in Saori-chō, Aichi Prefecture on September 27, 1890. He lost his sight when he was two years old. Seven years later he became a pupil of koto master Komatsu Kagekazu. In 1913, he was given the artist name Masakazu and became an independent, taking a position teaching at the Nagoya Municipal School for the Blind and Deaf. He became a leading presence in Nagoya's Jiuta and Sōkyoku scene, eventually serving as director of the Kokufū Music Training Institute. Active as both a performer and teacher, he was involved in music notation and composition, with significant contributions including complete notations for the Sein-ryū shakuhachi scores as well as scores for most of the koto kumiuta repertoire, which he published in 1941.
