Koto player and composer Tateyama Noboru was born in Osaka in 1876. He studied with Tatezaki Kengyō as well as Tatezawa Kōtō. He began writing his own music in 1893 and became representative of the Meiji Shinkyoku movement in Osaka. Many of his works became popular during the Meiji era, including Mizu wa Utsuwa, Tsurukame, Hototogisu no Kyoku, and Kongōseki.
