Hanada Ikkei

1934 - 10/1/2014

Shakuhachi

Shakuhachi Hanada Ikkei (1934–2014) received his Fuke Zen Shakuhachi training at the Itchoken Temple in Japan. His teacher, Genjō Iso Oshō, was the 21st abbot of the Itchoken Temple. He practiced there for 30 years and earned the title of master. During his time in Japan, he also served as a professor of ethics at Kyushu State University.
In 1997, he founded Ichion-Kai, a center for the Komusō Shakuhachi community, near Bremen. Until his death, he tirelessly passed on the Fuke Zen Shakuhachi tradition in Germany, performing numerous concerts and teaching students.
Even in Germany, he remained true to the Japanese tradition, and it was a precious and unique opportunity for his students to learn from him the aesthetics of Zen art which, to Hanada-sensei, seemed to have been lost in both modern Europe and Japan.
