Tsuda Michiko was born April 13, 1924. She studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under her father, Tsuda Seikan and, following her father’s passing, Hagiwara Seigin. She started teaching in 1950, becoming a professor at the University of Washington's School of Music and lecturer at Osaka University of Foreign Studies. She frequently gave concerts with Hagiwara-sensei throughout Japan and on the radio. A director of the Kyoto Tōdō Ongaku-kai, she was active as a performer and teacher for more than 40 years.
