Dr. Jizhang Yi (Postdoc, Harvard University; PhD, University of Toronto) is a faculty member and Interim Director of the Institute for Humanistic Buddhist Thought & Practice at the University of Toronto. He is a philosopher specializing in Buddhist Studies, Philosophical Theology, and Comparative Philosophy, with a strong interdisciplinary focus. His research explores the intersections of Chan/Zen Buddhism, Western philosophy, and theological thought, engaging with figures such as Kierkegaard and drawing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Tibetan Buddhism, Indian Mahāyāna traditions, Daoism, and Confucianism. His forthcoming book, Knowing/Seeing Truth: Conceptual Bridges between Kierkegaard and Chan Buddhism (Springer, 2025), exemplifies his commitment to rigorous and comparative philosophical inquiry.

He started learning to play Shakuhachi as a practice of Chan/Zen meditation in Vancouver in 2015. He also enjoys playing the guqin, composing poetry, and practicing martial arts. He is a lifelong member of China’s Guqin Academy, a certified instructor of Jeet Kune Do (JKD), founded by Bruce Lee, and a poet with several published works.
