Studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi with Yoshikawa Ryūkuzan, Maruyama Kenzan, Hoshida Ichizan I, and finally with Nakao Tozan to receive his masters license. Takahira had a long career performing, recording, and teaching. He was the head of the Hyogo branch of the Tozan-Ryū and was elected to the Tozan Hall of Fame.
