Composer and Ueda-ryū shakuhachi player Horii Kojirō was born in Tokyo in 1907.
He graduated from Keio University, Faculty of Law in 1931.
Aside from his work as a shakuhachi performer, in 1955, he won the Minister of Education Award in the composition category of the Hōgaku Competition for his work "Numa," and in 1964 he won the Arts Festival Encouragement Award for his work "Bamboo Rhythm." He has composed many works, including those for the films "Twenty-Four Eyes" and "Miyamoto Musashi".
