Ōdate Hokusei (Ōdate Eiichi) was born October 25, 1911 in Kanagawa Prefecture. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Inoue Kidō, Sakagami Sosei, and Kawase Junsuke II. He began teaching in 1953. He belonged to Chikuyu-sha and was head of the Hokusei-kai. He taught shakuhachi for 40 years.
