Born March 11, 1927 in Nagano Prefecture, Yazaki Akiko studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Michio Miyagi and Miyagi Kiyoko, and graduated from the Tokyo Academy of Music. She was a member of the Miyagi-kai performance group, Yonin-no-kai. She won the gold medal at the Moscow Folk Music Competition in 1957, and the grand prize at the Arts Festival in 1959, 1966, and 1971, and was a lecturer at Tokyo University of the Arts. She was a prolific performer and recording artist, equally at home in classical Sankyoku (ensemble music) as she was in contemporary works.
