Born in Tochigi Prefecture, January 10, 1920, Saotome Fumisei (Tanaka Tefu) studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Yonekawa Fumiko I, earning her Shihan (masters license) in 1944. Affiliated with the Sōchō-kai, she was an active performer and teacher for more than 50 years.
