Born in Tokyo, January 1, 1921, Terai Tamasue (Terai Toshiko) studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Araya Kieko and Sakamoto Tsutomu, earning her teaching credentials in 1955. She belonged to the Tamahiro-kai and heads the Tamasue-kai.
