Musicologist Kanda Kayū was born in Niigata Prefecture in 1947 and graduated from Chuo University. He is an Honorary Member of the Japan Shakuhachi Professional-players Network (JSPN). His understanding of the shakuhachi is based in a lifetime dedicated to applied and historical study of traditional repertoire from consummate masters, beginning with works from the lineage of Jin Nyodō. Widely regarded as an authoritative modern source on shakuhachi research, he is author of 虚無僧と尺八筆記 / Komusō and Shakuhachi Notes (2019), published by the Hōgaku Journal.
