Abe Kōyō (Abe Masaaki) was born September 13, 1938 in Iwate Prefecture. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Ōta Kōzan and became an instructor in 1969. He belonged to the Tozan-ryū Kōyō-kai and the Tozan-ryū Tohoku branch.
