Abe Kōzan (Abe Shigeo) was born February 26, 1912 in Nagano Prefecture. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Nakamura Kōzan and became an instructor in 1958. He belonged to the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai and was active as a teacher and performer for more than 50 years.
