Born January 25, 1913, Ueno Shūzan (Ueno Yoshio) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Konishi Kunzan. He became an instructor in 1959. He was the head of the Tozan-ryū Toshū-kai, vice-chairman of the council of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gakukan, vice-chairman of the Kanto branch, and council member of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai.
