Sugawara Rozan (Sugawara Kyoshi) was born August 20, 1909 in Chiba City. He studied Yōzan-ryū shakuhachi under Katsuta Yōzan and began teaching in 1934. He belonged to the Yōzan-kai and was a teacher and performer for more than 40 years.
