Born March 29, 1922 in Hyogo Prefecture, Furuya Tomizō studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Miyagi Michio, graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, and started teaching in 1942. He was the head of the Hōyū-kai and planning committee member of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai.
