Motoji Shinzan was born November 5, 1932 in Tottori Prefecture. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Shioya Tozan. He received his instructors license and began teaching in 1954. He was a member of the Tozan-ryu Shakuhachi Gaku-kai, the Shizuoka Prefecture Sankyoku Federation, and the Hamamatsu City Sankyoku Association.
