Kikunishi Shigeki (Nakanishi Sadakichi) was a koto player of the Osaka Ikuta-ryū (Kikusuji) and a shamisen player of the Nogawa-ryū .
He was born on August 23, 1878 in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo Prefecture, as the sixth son of Nakanishi Buemon, who manufactured sake barrels. He became blind as a child due to an illness, and was taught the koto and shamisen by his uncle, Nishihara Kengyō. He later studied under Kikunaka Kengyō II in Ōsaka, from whom he received his teacher certification in 1897. He was awarded the title of Dai-kengyō (grand master) in 1914. He introduced Miyagi Michio to Nakajima Kengyō II, who was his junior apprentice on the shamisen.
In 1900, he married Kananaka Kikuto. Together, they had one son and four daughters.
He trained many students at his home in Hanakuma, Kōbe.
He was the first president of the Hyōgo Prefecture Koto Federation.
He taught his eldest daughter, Asako, koto and shamisen from a young age, but she died in 1936 at the age of 37.
He composed and arranged many pieces, including Kiku no Nigori (“Remains of the Chrysanthemum,”) which he wrote for Asako's memorial service.
He was also known for his collection of fine and rare musical instruments, all of which were destroyed in the Great Kōbe Air Raid.
He died of acute heart failure on November 7, 1945. At the memorial service marking the 33rd anniversary of his death on November 7, 1977, his daughter Masako performed "Sode no Tsuyu.”
