Kikuyama Kakuji (Katayama Kakuji) was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, March 26, 1927, He studied Ikuta-ryū shamisen and koto under Inoki Gyokukin and Kikusui Shūhō, earning his teaching credentials in 1948. He was vice-chairman of the Music Department of the Japan Federation of the Blind and director of the Music Department of the Kyūshū Federation of the Blind.
