Born on June 13, 1901 in Oita Prefecture, Kawano Toshio studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Yamazaki Chikuin. He started teaching in 1921. During his 50+-years in the shakuhachi world, he was a member of the Kawase school (Chikuyusha) and performed with the Fukuoka Sankyoku Kyōkai, Chikuryū-kai, and Shirayuri-kai.
