Sakai Reiu (Sakai Masaru) was born December 14, 1889 in Nagano Prefecture. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Aoki Reibo I and started teaching in 1941. During his more than 50 years in shakuhachi he belonged to the Reibo-kai and was the head of the Suzu-kai.
