Shikata Shūfū (Shikata Eiichi) was born on January 3, 1914 in Hyogo Prefecture. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Uchida Shūdō, Horie Shunpū, and Satō Seibi. He began teaching in 1960. He belonged to the Bifū-kai at its headquarter branch. He was part of the shakuhachi world for more than 40 years.
