Born on November 8, 1904 in Hyogo Prefecture, Fujiwara Ryūfū (Fujiwara Kakuji) studied Ueda-ryū shakuhachi under Fujimoto Suizan. He began his teaching career in 1924. During his almost five decades in shakuhachi he was an advisor to the Ueda-ryū Kobe Executive Committee and the Kobe Min’yō Study Group.
