Born in Osaka 1886, Tateshige Kazuei (Umegaki Eikichi) lost his sight at the age of four. In 1893 he began his studies of Ikuta-ryū koto with Tateyama Noboru. He joined the Nihon Tōdō Ongaku-kai when it was established in 1915, but left in 1943 to become part of the reorganized Tōdō Hōgaku-kai. Tateshige became the head of that group in 1945.
