Yamase Shōin III (Yamasei Shizuko/ Kihara Shizuko)was born December 6, 1932. Studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Nakanoshima Kinichi, Yamase Shōin II (her elder sister), Yagi Keiji, and Imai Keishō. She was the first graduate of the NHK Ikusei-kai, graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, completed the university's specialized course and graduate school, and was a lecturer at the University of Washington and Tokyo University of the Arts. She is president of the Seiin-kai and sixth iemoto of the Yamase school as well as a councillor of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai and the Yamada-ryū Kyōkai. Designated Living National Treasure in 2001 and a Person of Cultural Merit in 2013.
