Born in Tochigi Prefecture, August 30, 1926, Sakamoto Tsutomu studied Ikuta-ryū shamisen, koto, and composition under Miyagi Michio. He was head of the Gyokuko-kai, president of the Tochigi Prefecture Sankyoku Association, a member of the Federation of Contemporary Japanese Music Composers, and winner of the NHK Award at the Japanese Music Composition Competition(1953), the International Music Prize in France (1975), the Tochigi Cultural Encouragement Award (1978), and the Tochigi Prefectural Award for Cultural Merit (1982).
