Kobayashi Tamae was born in Tokyo, January 9, 1911. She studied Kyūshū-style shamisen and Ikuta-ryū koto under Katō Jūko and Kawase Satoko, both members of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai. She received her teacher certification in 1936. Head of the Gyokukin-kai, she was active as a performer, recording artist, and teacher for more than 50 years.
