Born November 22, 1915 in Ibaraki Prefecture, Ban Michiko studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Yamakawa Enshō, earning her Shihan (teaching license) in 1953. She won third place in the Tokyo Shimbun Hōgaku Competition in 1957, and passed the NHK audition. During her 40+ year career, she was head of the Misono-kai, and a member of the Shunwa-kai.
