Murase Chikuga (originally Murase Mitsunosuke) was born in Shizuoka, but moved to Tokyo and became an early student of Kawase Junsuke I at Chikuyusha. There, he became a trusted presence, even temporarily managing the school. He taught shakuhachi and shakuhachi making there for 70 years. He was a longtime member of the Japan Sankyoku Association.
