Tanaka Utayo (Tanaka Tsuneko) was born March 16, 1905. She studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Nakajima Utashito and was awarded her Shihan (masters license) in 1928. A performer and teacher for over 50 years, she was a member of the Seiha Hōgaku-kai and a counselor to the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai.
