Maruta Shimanō III (Tomita Hikaru) was born June 22, 1907 in Tokyo. He studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Ishimaru Kayori (Nakanoshima Shōsei lineage), and started teaching in 1927. In a career that spanned 60 years, he was a lecturer on Sōkyoku at Otsuma Gakuen, the head of the Maruta-kai, and affiliated with the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai.
