Born September 17, 1914 in Kyoto Prefecture, Mukai Utami (Mukai Mitsuko) studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Kitagawa Utano and began teaching in 1947. She belonged to the Kyoto Todo-kai, was head of the Aoyagi-kai, and a member of the Sō no Yube performing group.
