Born October 1, 1912 in Morioka City, Sugimoto Kikui (Mitsuhashi Chiyoko) studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Imai Keishō, Nakanoshima Kin’ichi, and Nakakura Kenshō. She started teaching in 1930. During a career of more than 50 years, she was head of the Kikui-kai, a counsel of the Yamada-ryū Kyōkai and the Nihon Sankyoku-kai as well as a member of the Keifu-kai.
