Watanabe Hofuga (Watanabe Masu) was born August 21, 1896 in Tokyo. She studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Fukuyama Tōga, a disciple of Yamaki IV. She began teaching in 1916 and belonged to the Yamaki-kai and was head of the Fukuju-kai. Her career as a performer and a teacher spanned more than 50 years.
