Born on August 29, 1902 in Aichi Prefecture, Kawai Itsupō (Kawai Utarō) studied Itsudō-ha Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Mizutani Itsusei, Seien-ryū with Katō Seien, and Kinko-ryū with Yoshida Seifū. He was a member of the Itsudō-ha Shakuhachi Workshop and the head of the association's Asuke branch. He was active in the shakuhachi world for more than 50 years.
