Born March 29, 1920 in Kochi Prefecture, Kumon Sōfū (Kumon Minoru) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Suzuki Shōfū. He started teaching in 1956 and belonged to the Kochi branch of the Bifū-kai.
