Born on April 18, 1905 in Kumamoto Prefecture, Tsuruta Itsushū (Tsuruta Tadashi) had a career in the shakuhachi world that spanned five decades. He studied Itsudō-ha Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Ikeda Itsuren and Shimizu Itsukei and was a member of the Shakuhachi Itsuren-kai. He began teaching in 1930 and achieved the rank of Dai-Shihan in 1971.
