Matsumoto Suifū studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Satō Seibi, earning his teaching certificate in 1956. He won the 1959 Japan Sankyoku Association Competition as well as the Kinko-ryū Competition in 1961. He became an important part of the Bifū-kai, and served as director of the Osaka Sankyoku Kyokai.
