Born 1951 in Tokyo.
While still in high school, he studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi with Kitahara Kozan II.
In 1974 he completed the NHK's Japanese Music Technicians Training Program.
He is active in a wide range of repertoire, from classical to contemporary works. In addition to his activities in the sankyoku world, he also performs with orchestras, vocalists, and other Western musicians, as well as in rock, dance, recitation, and other genres.
A frequent performer on NHK-FM, he has also been active in the creation of new shakuhachi music, and many of his works have been published in sheet music.
Currently he is Chairman of the Tozan-ryū Council, Chairman of the Examination Committee, and head of the Dojo.
