He lost his eyesight at the age of eight and became an introductory performer at the Kikunaga Kengyo school in Okayama, and later studied under Tokuhisa Tokunaga in Osaka . He is said to have outstanding memory and he learned the true skill of the Nogawa style shamisen in just three months.
