Lance Giroux’s interest in performing music began with piano and silver flute during youth. His profession as a teacher of leadership and personal effectiveness spanned decades, during which he used silver flute to augment courses he taught throughout North America, Europe, Asia, North Africa and SE Asia. In 2015 following a course he led in Japan, Lance was gifted a shakuhachi and then sought out Elliot Kanshin Kallen for instruction. Attending numerous Shakuhachi Summer Camps of the Rockies, he attended workshops led by Riley Kohō Lee, Kaoru Kakizakai, Christopher Yohmei Blasdel, David Kansuke Wheeler, Kurahashi Yōdō II – and koto / shamisen master Yoko Hiraoka. In 2024, he was awarded his shakuhachi Shoden certificate through the Chikuyusha school, the largest and oldest organization in the Kinko-ryū lineage. Lance is ranked Yondan in the martial art Aikido, and is sensei and dojo cho of Aikido of Konocti in Northern California. There he often integrates shakuhachi into his Aikido instruction. He studies shakuhachi regularly under Elliot Kanshin Kallen.
