Muraoka Minoru

村岡 実

Muraoka Minoru
5/21/1923 - 1/2/2014

尺八

Born in 1923 in Miyakonojō, (as Muraoka Fukuo), Muraoka Minoru began his shakuhachi studies with the classical Tozan-Ryū repertoire, eventually switching to become a student of Kikuchi Tansui to play traditional folk music (Minyō). In 1959 he left traditional styles to explore using the shakuhachi in jazz and popular music, and focused on improving the instrument itself. In 1962 he joined with shakuhachi masters Yokoyama Katsuya and Miyata Kohachiro in a group called San-Jyuso-dan with the goal of bringing the shakuhachi to a wider audience. In 1964 he began his career as a solo artist and prolific recording artist and performer. His many records included collaborations with other traditional Japanese instruments as well as well-known jazz players like Herbie Mann. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 90.
