Nakajima Utashito (Nakajima Toshiyuki) was born March 21, 1896 in Kyoto Prefecture. He studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen under Nakahira Fukunoichi and Hase Yuki, earning his teaching credentials in 1913. He advocated for the use of sheet music (as opposed to just aural transmission of pieces) and contributed to the publication of notation scores. Along with Miyagi Michio and Nakao Tozan, he established the New Japanese Music Movement of the early 20th century. He founded the Seiha Hōgaku-kai in 1956. In 1959 he founded the Seiha Conservatory of Music, where he trained younger students. An advisor to the Nihon Sankyoku Kyōkai, he also attended the US International Music Council, the International Culture and Arts Festival, and other important international functions as a cultural ambassador. He passed away in 1979.
