Born November 2, 1909 in Osaka, Iwai Shūrei (Iwai Kōhei) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Ōyabu Shūrei. He was an advisor to the Tamagawa-sha and active in the shakuhachi world for more than 40 years.
