Born in Osaka, October 5, 1913, Tomiyama Seikin I (Hatta Seiji) lost his sight before he was two years old. From the age of five he studied Tsuguyama-ryū koto and Nogawa-style shamisen under Tominaga Keikin. He received his teacher certification and his professional name, Tomiyama Seikin, from Tominaga in 1926. Upon Tominaga’s passing in 1930, he became a live-in student (uchideshi) of the head of the Sei-on-kai in Tokyo, Tomizaki Shunshō, earning his Shihan (teaching license) as an Ikuta-ryū master in 1935. He received awards from the Minister of Education in 1944,1959, and 1962, and was designated as an individual holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) in 1969. In 1988 he became a member of the Japan Arts Academy. He was active as a teacher, performer, and composer for over 75 years. He retired in 2000, taking the name Tomiyama Seio, giving the designation of Tomiyama Seikin II to his son. He passed away on September 3, 2008 in Kamakura.
