Born September 24, 1910 in Tokyo, Masuda Utawa (Masuda Akiko) studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Sugawara Hōwa (Fukuchi Masue lineage). She was active as a teacher and performer for more than 40 years and was the head of the Wayaso-kai.
