Born May 24, 1939 in Fukushima Prefecture, Midorikawa Sonotaka (Midorikawa Tomoko) studied Yamada-ryū koto and shamisen under Yamakawa Enshō and Ishii Chiyonami. She graduated from the 12th class of the NHK Hōgaku Ikusei-kai.started teaching in 1963. She passed the NHK audition in 1967.
