Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos was born in Japan where he spent many years studying shakuhachi. It was through his studies of Eastern Religions from the University of California at Santa Barbara and the practice of martial arts and meditation that inspired him to go to Japan to study shakuhachi. He has studied with several shakuhachi masters in Japan of both the Tozan and Kinko schools including Kanzan Ogawa, Iccho Muramatsu, Kaoru Kakizakai, Teruo Furuya, Katsuya Yokoyama, Yoshinobu Taniguchi, Takahashi Tokuyama, Akikazu Nakamura, and Atsuya Okuda. In 2001, after receiving his Shihan (master) license from Kaoru Kakizakai and Katsuya Yokoyama, he returned to Canada to start teaching, performing, recording, and making shakuhachi. In 2002, he organized the first Vancouver Shakuhachi Festival at the University of British Columbia. In November of 2008, Alcvin received his Dai Shihan (grand master) license from Yoshinobu Taniguchi, taking the new name, "Ryuzen" (Dragon Meditation). Alcvin has also studied jinashi shakuhachi playing and the Zensabo repertoire intensively with Atsuya Okuda and shakuhachi construction techniques with Shugetsu Yamaguchi, Murai Eigoro, and jiari construction with Miura Ryuho. Alcvin has several students in Canada, USA, China, and Europe and conducts pilgrimages to Japan every few years to harvest bamboo and to visit various sacred sites associated with the shakuhachi flute. Alcvin is an executive director of the World Shakuhachi Fesitval 2022 in Chaozhou, China.
