Yashita Isamu was born in Tokyo in 1929. In 1953, he was introduced to Min'yō shakuhachi master Kikuchi Tanui, and Min'yō (traditional folk music) became Yashita's main focus. He accompanied Min'yō songs on countless records, radio, and television. In 1965, he formed the Shakuhachi Min'yō Yuseikai and served as the head of the association, later becoming the head of the Yashita School. He was awarded the highest rank of "Meijin" by the Japan Min'yō Association.
